Instructions

Step 1: Mixing the Base

  1. Mix well 1 c. brown sugar and 1/2 c. shortening.
  2. Add 1 c. molasses and mix well.
  3. Stir in 2 t. bak. soda.
  4. Add 1 c. hot water (full after steam has run off) into the cake mix.

Step 2: Adding Dry Ingredients and Baking

  1. Mix in 3 c. flour, 1 t. ginger, 1 t. cinnamon, 1 t. allspice, 1 t. nutmeg, 1 t. cloves, and 1/2 t. salt.
  2. Add the last 2 well beaten eggs and mix. The batter should be quite thin.
  3. Bake in a moderate oven for 30 mins until a rich golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  4. Optional: Add raisins, candied fruit, nuts, or serve with chocolate frosting if desired.

💡 Make-Ahead & Storage: Store the baked gingerbread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or wrap tightly and freeze for up to 2 months.
