Instructions

Step 1: Making the Cake Batter

  1. Mix 2 cups flour, 1 1/2 tbsp salt, and 2 cups sugar together and set aside.
  2. In a saucepan, combine 1 stick oleo, 1/2 cup oil (or up to 3/4 cup), 3 1/2 tbsp cocoa, and 1 cup water. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat.
  3. Pour the hot chocolate mixture over the dry ingredients and mix well.
  4. Add 1/2 cup sour milk, 2 beaten eggs, 1 tsp baking soda, and 1 tsp vanilla, mixing thoroughly until smooth.

Step 2: Baking

  1. Grease and flour an extra large pan (or combination of a 9x13 and 9x9 pan).
  2. Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 20 minutes at 400°F until a golden crust forms and the center springs back when lightly touched.

Step 3: Frosting and Finishing

  1. Five minutes before the cake is done, prepare the frosting: in a saucepan, bring 1 stick oleo, 3 1/2 tbsp cocoa, and 1/3 cup milk to a boil, stirring constantly.
  2. Remove from heat and add 1 box sifted powdered sugar. Put back over heat and bring just barely to a boil.
  3. Pour the hot frosting evenly over the hot cake while still in the pan, allowing it to soak slightly into the surface.

💡 Make-Ahead & Storage: Store the frosted cake covered at room temperature for up to 2 days, or refrigerate for up to 5 days.
