Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Crust

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and grease an 8x8x2 inch pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, cream 1/2 cup butter or margarine, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1 tsp vanilla, and 1/8 tsp salt until fluffy.
  3. Beat in 1 egg yolk and stir in 1 1/4 cups flour until a soft dough forms.
  4. Press the dough into the pan and bake on the lowest rack for 10 minutes.

Step 2: Prepare the Topping and Final Bake

  1. In a small bowl, beat 1 egg white and 1/4 cup brown sugar until smooth and frothy.
  2. Stir in 1 cup nuts and 1/2 tsp cinnamon.
  3. Spread the mixture over the hot crust and bake on the middle rack for 15 minutes until the top is firm to the touch.
  4. Cool on a wire rack and cut into squares while warm.
