Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Meat Mixture

  1. Mix 1/2 cup evaporated milk with 1/4 cup bread crumbs in a mixing bowl.
  2. Beat in the next 5 ingredients (1 egg, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp dry mustard, 1/4 tsp pepper, and 1/3 cup minced onion).
  3. Mix in 1 lb ground beef thoroughly using a fork.
  4. Turn the mixture evenly into a 9” pie plate.

Step 2: Bake and Top

  1. Bake in a moderate oven at 350°F for 30 minutes until cooked through.
  2. Remove from the oven and cover the hot meat with cheese slices.
  3. Swirl mashed potatoes on top of the cheese; dot generously with butter.
  4. Place under the broiler until the butter is melted and the potato peaks are lightly browned and fragrant.

💡 Make-Ahead & Storage: Assemble the meat base ahead of time and refrigerate unbaked for up to 24 hours before baking and topping.
