Instructions

Step 1: Making the Batter

  1. Cream together 1 cup sugar and 1/2 cup shortening.
  2. Add 1 egg and mix well.
  3. Sift together 1 1/2 cups flour, 1 tsp soda, and 1/2 tsp salt.
  4. Add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture alternately with 1/2 cup strong coffee.
  5. Combine all the above ingredients thoroughly, then fold in 2 cups raw apples (chopped fine).

Step 2: Topping and Baking

  1. Pour the batter into a greased baking pan.
  2. Sprinkle 1/3 cup brown sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, and 1/2 cup nuts evenly over the top of the cake before baking.
  3. Bake at 350° oven for 40 mins, or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
