Instructions

Preparation & Mixing

  1. Melt 2/3 cup shortening in a saucepan. Stir in 1 lb. brown sugar, mix well, and let cool.
  2. Sift together 2 3/4 cups sifted flour, 2 1/2 tsp. baking powder, and 1/2 tsp. salt.
  3. To the cooled shortening mixture, add 3 eggs one at a time, beating thoroughly after each addition.
  4. Gradually blend in the sifted dry ingredients until just combined.
  5. Stir in 1 cup nuts and 1 (6 oz) package chocolate chips.

Baking & Slicing

  1. Spread the batter evenly into a greased and floured baking pan.
  2. Bake at 350°F for 25 to 30 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean and the edges are golden brown.
  3. When almost cool, cut into bars.
