Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Base
- Preheat your oven to 400°F and grease your cookie sheets.
- In a large bowl, cream the 1/2 cup shortening and 1 1/2 cups brown sugar together with an electric mixer. Beat in the 1 egg.
Step 2: Combine Ingredients
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the 2 cups flour, 1 tsp baking soda, 1/2 tsp salt, and optional spices.
- Add half of the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture and blend well.
- Stir in the 1/2 cup milk.
- Add the remaining dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
Step 3: Fold and Bake
- By hand, fold in the 1 cup apples, 1 cup raisins, and 1 cup nuts.
- Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto the prepared cookie sheets.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the centers are set.
