Instructions

Step 1: Preparation and Mixing

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F and grease your cookie sheets.
  2. In a large bowl, thoroughly cream together the 3/4 cup shortening, 1 cup brown sugar, and 1 egg with an electric mixer.
  3. Stir in the 1 1/2 cups applesauce.

Step 2: Combining and Baking

  1. In a separate bowl, sift together the 2 1/4 cups flour, 1/2 tsp baking soda, 1/2 tsp salt, 3/4 tsp cinnamon, and 1/4 tsp cloves.
  2. Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and stir until just combined.
  3. By hand, fold in the 1 cup raisins and 1/2 cup nuts.
  4. Drop the dough by rounded teaspoonfuls onto the prepared cookie sheets.
