Instructions

Step 1: Prep and Steep

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 9x5 inch loaf pan.
  2. In a small, heatproof bowl, place the 2 tablespoons butter and 2 tablespoons orange zest. Pour the 1/2 cup boiling water over them and let the mixture steep to infuse the flavors.

Step 2: Mix Wet and Dry

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: 2 cups flour, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1 teaspoon baking powder.
  2. In a separate medium bowl, beat the 1 large egg with the 1 cup sugar. Stir in the 1/3 cup orange juice and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract.
  3. Add the steeped butter, zest, and water mixture to the egg mixture and stir to combine.

Step 3: Combine and Bake

  1. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix with a spatula until just moistened. Do not overmix.
  2. Fold in the 1/2 cup chopped walnuts.
  3. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and bake for 1 hour, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean and golden brown.
  4. Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes before turning it out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
