Instructions
Step 1: Infuse Overnight
- In a large pot or bowl, combine the ½ gallon (2 litres) red wine with the 1 orange peelings, 5-6 whole cloves, 3-4 slices ginger, 1 tsp cardamom seeds, and 2-3 cinnamon sticks.
Step 2: Steep and Heat
- Cover and let the mixture soak at room temperature overnight to infuse the spices into the wine.
- The next day, place the pot over medium-low heat and gently bring the mixture almost to a boil without letting it fully boil, until steaming hot and fragrant.
- Let it steep at a hot, steaming temperature for about 20-30 minutes.
Step 3: Sweeten, Spike, and Serve
- Stir in the ¾ cup sugar until it dissolves completely, tasting and adding more if you prefer it sweeter.
- If using, stir in the vodka just before serving.
- To serve, place a small spoonful of raisins and almonds into the bottom of each mug and ladle the hot Glögg over them until piping hot.
💡 Make-Ahead & Storage: The spiced wine can be infused overnight and reheated gently before serving; store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
