| 1 Bottle | Red Wine | Hearty, 750ml, like Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot |
| 1 Cup | Apple Cider | Or pineapple juice |
| 1 Stick | Cinnamon | Whole |
| 6 | Cloves | Whole |
| 1 tsp | Allspice | Ground |
| ¼ tsp | Nutmeg | Grated |
| ½ tsp | Bitters | Standard |
| 1 | Orange | Thinly sliced, with a few reserved for garnish |
Instructions
Step 1: Combine and Heat
- In a large saucepan or pot, combine the 1 bottle hearty red wine, 1 cup apple cider, ½ tsp bitters, 1 tsp allspice, 6 whole cloves, ¼ tsp grated nutmeg, and the 1 cinnamon stick.
Step 2: Simmer and Infuse
- Add most of the 1 orange slices to the pot, reserving a few for garnish.
- Gently heat the mixture over medium-low heat until it is hot and steaming. Do not let it boil, as this will cook off the alcohol.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let the wine simmer gently for at least 15 minutes until fragrant and well-infused.
Step 3: Strain and Serve
- Strain the mulled wine into 4 large, pre-warmed mugs.
- Float a reserved 1 orange slice on top of each mug for garnish and serve immediately while hot.
💡 Make-Ahead & Storage: Leftover mulled wine can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and gently reheated on the stove without boiling.
