Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Batter
- Preheat oven to 350°F and grease a deep baking dish with some of the 1/2 lb melted butter.
- In a large bowl, mix the 1/2 lb grated Muenster cheese, 6 egg yolks, 2 tbsp flour, 1/2 lb melted butter, 1 large pkg cottage cheese, 8 oz sour cream, salt, and pepper together.
- Stir in enough milk to make the mixture the consistency of pancake batter.
- In a separate clean bowl, beat the 6 egg whites until stiff peaks form, then gently fold them into the cheese batter.
Step 2: Assemble and Bake
- Take a sheet of 1 pkg phyllo dough and crumple it loosely like a napkin.
- Dip the crumpled sheet into the cheese batter, then place it into the prepared deep buttered baking dish. Repeat to make 2 layers of dipped phyllo.
- Pour any unused cheese filling over the top of the layers.
- Bake at 350°F for 1 hour until puffed, golden brown, and set in the center.
- (Alternative Method): Try putting the 1 pkg phyllo dough in flat layers, brushing each sheet with 1/2 lb melted butter, and then spreading the cheese filling, repeating for many layers.
💡 Make-Ahead & Storage: Can be assembled a few hours ahead and kept refrigerated before baking. Leftovers reheat well in a 350°F oven to restore crispness.
