A surprisingly simple, old-fashioned method for creating a tender, moist baked ham. A thick-cut ham steak is simmered in milk in a covered casserole for 2 hours.

1 sliceHam, sliced thick (2 or 2 1/2 inches)
To CoverMilk or Milk & Water

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to moderate (350°F).
  2. Remove rind from ham. Wipe with a damp cloth.
  3. Place ham in a granite pan or casserole dish.
  4. Cover the ham with milk (or milk and water).
  5. Place a cover on the pan or casserole.
  6. Bake in the moderate oven for about 2 hours.
  7. If the ham is not brown, remove the cover and let it bake for a few more minutes to brown.
