A classic make-ahead breakfast or brunch casserole, also known as a strata. Cubed bread and cheddar cheese are layered and soaked in a simple egg custard, then baked until puffed and golden.

Instructions
- Grease a casserole dish.
- Remove the crusts from the bread and cut it into small cubes.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the well-beaten eggs, salt, pepper, and milk.
- To assemble, create alternating layers in the prepared casserole dish: place a layer of bread cubes, then a layer of cubed cheese, and pour some of the egg mixture over the top.
- Repeat the layers until all ingredients have been used.
- Cover the dish and place it in the refrigerator overnight.
- When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 325°F.
- Bake the casserole uncovered for 1 hour, or until the center is set and the top is golden brown.
- Serve immediately.
Note
While the recipe suggests refrigerating overnight for best results, the author notes, “You can mix this up and bake immediately if you so desire.”
