Instructions
Step 1: Prepare and Bake the Cake
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Cream together 2 cups sugar and 1 cup vegetable shortening in a large bowl until light and fluffy.
- Add 4 eggs to the creamed mixture and beat thoroughly.
- Sift together 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 1/3 cup cocoa powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
- Add the sifted dry ingredients to the creamed mixture and mix until just combined.
- Gently fold in 3 teaspoons vanilla extract and 1 cup chopped nuts.
- Pour the batter into a greased 9x13-inch baking pan and bake at 350°F for 30 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Step 2: Apply Toppings and Icing
- Immediately after removing the cake from the oven, spread 1 (9 oz) jar marshmallow creme evenly over the hot cake.
- In a separate bowl, combine 2 sticks melted butter, 1 lb powdered sugar, 1/2 cup cocoa powder, 1/2 cup evaporated milk, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Mix until smooth and pourable.
- Pour this chocolate icing mixture over the marshmallow layer on the cake, spreading gently to cover completely if needed.
