3/4 TeaspoonLemon Rind

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, combine the sugar, milk, Spry (shortening), and salt.
  2. Bring to a rolling boil, stirring constantly, and cook for exactly 1 minute.
  3. Remove from the heat and add the lemon rind.
  4. Let the mixture cool until warm, then beat with an electric mixer until it becomes thick, creamy, and spreadable.
  5. Use immediately on a cooled cake.

Note

“Spry” was a popular brand of vegetable shortening. Modern-day Crisco is a direct substitute.
