Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a standard loaf pan.
- In a large bowl, cream the sugar and shortening together with an electric mixer. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves.
- Add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture alternately with the applesauce, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
- Gently fold in the raisins and nuts.
- Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan.
- Bake for 1 hour, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes before turning it out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
