Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease a 9x13 inch pan.
  2. In a bowl, mix the dry German chocolate cake mix, 2/3 cup of evaporated milk, and the melted butter. The mixture will be a thick batter.
  3. Pour half of this batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly to form the bottom crust.
  4. Bake for 15 minutes.
  5. While the first layer is baking, combine the unwrapped caramels and 1/3 cup of evaporated milk in a saucepan. Heat on low, stirring frequently, until the caramels are completely melted and the mixture is smooth.
  6. Pour the melted caramel mixture over the baked cake layer.
  7. Sprinkle the 1 cup of chocolate chips and 1 cup of nuts over the caramel.
  8. Carefully drop spoonfuls of the remaining half of the batter over the top and gently spread to cover the filling.
  9. Return to the oven and bake for another 20 minutes, or until the top layer is cooked through.
  10. Let cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares.
