Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F. Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a small saucepan, melt the butterscotch morsels with the ¼ cup of water over low heat. Stir until smooth, then set aside to cool.
  3. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.
  4. In a large bowl, cream the shortening and sugar together with an electric mixer.
  5. Add the unbeaten eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  6. Blend in the cooled butterscotch mixture.
  7. Alternately add the dry ingredients and the milk to the creamed mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  8. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Note

The original recipe card did not list a primary liquid for the batter (like milk or buttermilk). One cup of milk has been added to create a standard, workable cake batter.
