Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease a round cake pan or a small cast-iron skillet.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Cut in the cold butter or margarine using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. In a separate bowl, lightly beat the eggs, then whisk in the buttermilk.
  5. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir with a fork until a soft dough forms.
  6. Gently fold in the raisins.
  7. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about 30 seconds, just until it comes together.
  8. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it in the prepared pan.
  9. With a sharp knife, cut a cross about a half-inch deep on the top of the loaf.
  10. Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the loaf is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
