Instructions

  1. In a large pot or bowl, combine the half gallon of red wine with the orange peelings (use a vegetable peeler to get wide strips of zest without the white pith), cloves, ginger slices, cardamom seeds, and cinnamon sticks.
  2. Cover and let the mixture soak at room temperature overnight to infuse the spices into the wine.
  3. The next day, pour the mixture into a large pot (if not already in one) and place it over medium-low heat.
  4. Gently bring the wine almost to a boil, but do not let it fully boil, as this will cook off the alcohol. Let it steep at a hot, steaming temperature for about 20-30 minutes.
  5. Stir in the sugar until it dissolves completely. Taste and add more if you prefer it sweeter.
  6. If you want a stronger drink, “spike” it with vodka now, stirring it in just before serving.
  7. To serve, place a small spoonful of raisins and almonds into each mug and ladle the hot Glögg over them.
