1Orange, thinly sliced

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan or pot, combine the bottle of red wine, the apple cider (or pineapple juice), bitters, allspice, whole cloves, grated nutmeg, and the cinnamon stick.
  2. Add most of the orange slices to the pot, reserving a few for garnish.
  3. Gently heat the mixture over medium-low heat until it is hot and steaming. Do not let it boil, as this will cook off the alcohol.
  4. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let the wine simmer gently for at least 15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  5. Strain the mulled wine into 4 large, pre-warmed mugs.
  6. Float a reserved orange slice on top of each mug for garnish and serve immediately.
